2022 Goals and Reflections

Term 1 Goal 2022

My Term 1 goal is to set up effective classroom routines and rules within my classroom. I would also like to work on establishing good relationships with my students, so that I am aware of their learning needs.

Reflection Term 1: 2022

This term I have worked on my goal of setting up effective classroom routines and rules within by making sure that classroom rules where put into place. I did this a couple of different ways. Firstly we created a classroom brainstorm where the students came up with how they think they should behave inside the classroom. I then made classroom posters that were introduced to class as reminders of behaviour and routines. However, something that I learnt from doing this was that it is a good idea to make sure that the posters are big enough to be seen from far away and that they are supported by pictures, especially for junior students. I feel that this term I have made some good progress on establishing my classroom rules and routines as I am able to remind my students of what they are supposed to be doing by referring to the visual posters. Something that I need to work on for next term would be finding a more effective way to gain the attention of the students and making sure that I wait for the whole class before giving the instruction/s.

Term 2 Goal 2022

My Term 2 goal is continue to work on classroom routines as well as developing and establishing an effective reading programme inside the classroom.

Reflection Term 2 2022

This term I have continued to work on my classroom routines and classroom management. Through trialling out different ways to get the classes attention I have added in another two strategies to my toolkit. These are "one two fold away" and "tahi, rua, toru, wha". I have found in most cases that using these phrases can be quite effective.  This term, I have also worked on establishing an effective reading programme and towards the end of this term the same for maths. Something that I found really helpful when working on my reading programme was sitting down with my mentor and discussing my reading groups, learning intentions and specific learning activities that I could use during my reading rotations.  I found this helpful because this gave me some ideas of what I would like to add and try out in my classroom. Something that I have found that I would like to improve on for next term when it comes to my reading programme would be allowing more student discussion where they can share their ideas during guided reading sessions.

Term 3 Goal 2022

My Term 3 goal is to establish and develop an effective writing and maths programme inside my classroom.

Reflection Term 3 2022:

This term I have worked on developing an effective maths and writing programme. Towards the end of last term, I looked at my maths data and them discussed with my mentor how I could plan for my maths groups. We also discussed ways of organising my students according to their individual learning needs. During one of my BT release sessions we looked at some maths learning tasks and warm-up games  that I could use inside my classroom. I have also spoken to some of the other teachers in the school about ideas and how they run their maths programmes. After doing this I have incorporated a range of ideas taken from my placements and other teachers within the school and added them to my maths routines. Something that I would link to work on next term would be establishing hands-on interactive maths activities that link to the learning intentions and the students' needs.

My other learning focus/goal this term has been establishing a solid writing programme that engages and supports the writing needs of the students. Originally, I was doing witting as a whole class. However I noticed that, while this was working for some students, it wasn't allowing some of them to push themselves a bit with their writing ability. After observing an experienced teacher take a writing session I saw how she structured the writing session and how she organised the students into groups based on their writing ability. I found this to be really helpful as I was able to get some ideas about how to introduce topics and set expectations into my writing sessions. It also made me think about how I could organise my students into writing groups. After seeing that session I have tried out some of these ideas, adapting them to suit my learners' needs.  This has resulted in big progress over the term, which has been great to see.

Term 4 Goal 2022:

My term 4 goal is to continue to develop an effective maths programme and work on implementing digital learning into the classroom.
